Hannah’s outfit

Today I went into the office, and I wore this new sweater that I bought recently which has a slightly wide neck because it’s designed to be worn as an off shoulder. Then I had a meeting with a male colleague at my seat (he joined after your time so you don’t know who he is, and he is not part of the Meyer Labs team), and just before we started, he suddenly said “can you not be off shoulder”

I didn’t say it out loud but inside me I was immediately irritated by what he said. It’s not the first time that he commented on my outfit. There was another time when he called out that I wore a tank top and skirt.

I feel like I am being very “gen Z” that I feel offended by it (haha….), but I really was just quite irritated by it. There’s no dress code policy in this company, and I don’t even think I was wearing something that’s too cross the line. I am pretty there were colleagues who wore way less than me in the Meyer Labs team before, like MJ. And I feel like if it came from someone who’s more like my seniors, like one of the leads, or Edison who I feel closer to, I would be able to take it nicely. But with this collegue who’s not even from the same team, I really wanted to say to him “it’s none of your business”. Of course I didn’t say that out loud and just kept it within me instead, but it was such an unpleasant moment and made me feel slightly troubled. So I told Jenny and Edison over Whatsapp about it in the evening after going home.

Jenny actually gave me some pretty funny but kinda smart advice. She said if it happens again, next time I could say something like “you don’t understand fashion”, “that’s the design of the shirt, I can’t help with it 🤷🏻‍♀️”, or “eyes on the deck not on the shoulder”. Basically something to buff him, so that he knows he overstepped.

After hearing what Jenny said, I just realised I’m such a beginner at interpersonal social skills. I would just take it seriously and not know how to respond in that situation.

Here is my off shoulder sweater, I don’t think it is too sexy? I like it and I think I like how I look with it 🥺
